The Opportunity

The Android Platform Principal Engineer will be responsible for working with the Android tech leads across the Ally mobile squads and the development manager in the following:

  • Developing the short-term and long-term strategy for the platform.
  • Establishing, managing and enforcing the platform architecture and design standards.
  • Attending intake meetings and representing the platform and overall mobile teams.
  • Leading and/or participating in design sessions and reviews for new features.
  • Working with teams to coordinate POCs when required.
  • Identifying the technical debt backlog and managing the plan for efficiently addressing the outstanding tech debt.
  • Become SME of the mobile apps to be able to represent the teams in planning meetings, strategy sessions, architecture reviews etc., as required.
  • Perform code reviews from a quality and security perspective.
  • Mentor/coach new developers and Jr. developers.
  • Develop and support an onboarding process to get new developers up to speed quickly.
  • Be an influencer and encourager, promoting a best in class application and team.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies or trends that could impact the mobile channel.
  • Represent the mobile team in Ally strategic initiatives, as required.
  • Identify and coordinate opportunities for improvement in the mobile processes.
  • Be able to serve as a squad tech lead on a short-term basis, as required.
  • Partner closely with the iOS Platform Technical Lead to collaborate and to insure consistency across the platforms, when applicable.

The Work Itself

  • Lead the mobile development team to success within the agile framework.
  • Conduct design and code reviews. Mentor team members in performing effective code reviews.
  • Motivate the development team to deliver successful sprints and deployments.
  • Partner with solution architects and leverage industry best practices to design and deliver high quality native mobile applications.
  • Proficiency in platform native UX style standards.
  • Research the market trends and propose upgrades to platform, tools and frameworks
  • Assist business and technology leadership in understanding the options, costs and timing tradeoffs for potential decisions.
  • Work with the developers to ensure that stories are properly refined before accepting into sprint.
  • Escalate issues to the appropriate people early before they create significant impact to a sprint/release.
  • Review security testing reports/results and remediate potential vulnerabilities in a timely manner (within SLA).
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies or trends that could impact the mobile channel.
  • Make suggestions for opportunities to improve the Ally apps. Participate in spikes and hack-a-thons. Be creative.
  • Work with product owner and scrum master to maintain a minimum 2 sprints worth of stories refined in backlog.

The Skills You Bring

  • 5 + years of extensive experience and track record in leading development teams in native mobile development on the Android platform.
  • Extensive native Android development experience (minimum 5 years) using Java and Kotlin.
  • Experience/knowledge in hybrid crossplatform technologies ( ReactNative, Flutter )
  • Experience with web service integration (REST, JSON, GraphQL).
  • Excellent refining, scoping and estimation skills within the scrum process.
  • Experience in working on tools like Jira, Confluence, BitBucket, GitLab
  • Experience in CI/CD tools like Bitrise, CircleCI etc..
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) within the team and across the organization.
  • Ability to facilitate a highly productive and collaborative work environment.
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • BS degree in computer science or related technology major.
  • Finance/banking industry experience is a plus.
  • Experience in implementing unit tests.
  • Experience in implementing accessibility standards in mobile apps is a plus.
