The Opportunity

The Compliance Manager reports to the Sr. Compliance Director and is responsible for developing and enhancing the compliance program by working with the business line to ensure the day-to-day operations are conducted in adherence with federal and state law requirements, in addition to company policies and procedures. The Compliance Manager will have a critical role in establishing effective relationships with other independent risk management teams and business partners at Ally. This role requires knowledge of and familiarity with federal and state requirements for insurance products (including auto, homeowners, life, property & casualty etc.) and a solid business understanding associated with insurance operations.

The Work Itself


  • Provide oversight and challenge to the Insurance BL by determining regulatory risk based on federal and state requirements and effectively communicate these risks vertically and laterally to ensure all levels of management understand the risks posed
  • Support the continued effort to build, expand and implement compliance governance processes, policies, procedures, and controls within the team’s area of focus based on risk assessment results, internal audit findings, regulatory exam findings, Enterprise Compliance Program materials and applicable laws and regulations
  • Collaborate with leadership to ensure appropriate preventative and detective controls are established
  • Interact daily with the Insurance BL middle management to provide and obtain information and to build consensus regarding compliance application and interpretation
  • Collaborate with other leaders to develop strategy for quarterly Continuous Monitoring
  • Assist with performing due diligence for new products and initiatives (including marketing materials) proposed by the business
  • Support the team in providing oversight and challenge related to BL insurance regulatory changes, issues management and compliance training, as applicable
  • Work with the Insurance BL to review and map their policies and procedures to applicable state laws and regulations as part of the risk control self-assessment
  • Assist Insurance Compliance Director in leveraging compliance opportunities across the Insurance BL
  • Assist in creating governance and reporting documentation for areas of focus to include presentations for relevant committees and/or regulators as requested
  • Serve as contact within compliance in a collaborative way to foster positive working relationships, provide   sound advice and issue trends and stay abreast of major insurance business activities and process changes
  • Mentor & develop compliance staff and act as a knowledge resource by keeping abreast of relevant changes in state laws, rules, regulations that impact the insurance business line
  • Participate in timely responses to regulatory exams and internal audit requests

The Skills You Bring

  • Education level: Minimum -- bachelor's degree in business or related major, or equivalent work experience to include regulatory compliance or legal experience with expertise in insurance including auto/homeowners/life /property & casualty etc.
  • Total years and type of prior related experience: 7 + years
  • Attention to detail and superior written and oral communication skills with a proven ability to communicate, listen and influence effectively at  various levels of the organization
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, and deadline-oriented environment
  • Ability to identify, quantify and communicate risk and related root cause to various levels of leadership
  • Must possess strong critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Ability to multi-task and work well in a changing environment
  • Independent, self-motivated and works well with others
  • Strong leadership skills (organized, self-directed etc.) with proven track record of increasing responsibilities within the organization
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc.
