The Opportunity

Initiative – Enterprise Data Management (EDM) Team is responsible for the development, execution, supervision of plans, policies, program and practices that deliver key data controls, support data protection and enhancements to the strategic value of data that leads to data becoming an information asset. EDM supports the entire lifecycle of data from acquisition to archival.

EDM facilitates this function by owning and managing the EDM core pillars such as Business Glossary, Critical Inventories, Data Dictionary, Data Lineage, Data Flow, and Data Profiling for Ally Critical Elements (ACE).

This position will report to the Enterprise Data Management Manager and serve as a significant part of the Enterprise Data Management team, which works in conjunction with business lines across the Ally organization, such as Ally Home, Auto Finance, Ally Invest, and Deposits, just to name a few.  The goal of EDM Team is to deliver the critical data services for regulatory standards while driving value in the business in its data journey.

This requires the team member to communicate effectively in written and verbal forms, as part of the effort to gather and document business requirements clearly through conversations with both technical and business partners. This person will create and maintain data management documentation of procedures, standards, and policies, as needed for compliance.  Additionally, the Sr. Analyst within EDM will use pseudocode to develop nested SQL statements, produce advanced-level, function-driven Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, and create advanced business intelligence (BI) reports. 

Furthermore, the senior-level analyst will be expected to effectively design and deliver presentations to leadership, produce professionally appealing training videos, create user groups, custom fields, and object sets, and develop system diagrams, as required to adequately support the technical and business data stewards, data governance catalog, data dictionary, business glossary, data sources, critical inventory reports, critical processes, and user access requests, just to name a few.

Will work or interface with: Data governance tools, BI reporting tools, business partners, technical partners, SQL, Transact SQL, Python, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, project management tools (e.g., Jira), and document and video management tools (e.g., SharePoint, Confluence).

The Data Management business line is seeking a Senior EDM Analyst who is competent in developing queries from scratch, passionate about delivering exceptional customer service and results to our business partners, and has used SQL, Python, Microsoft Office (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook) within the past 3 years in a professional environment.

The Work Itself

  • Job Responsibilities:

    ·        Excellent written and verbal communication skills at the executive level; ability to lead and direct multiple projects simultaneously; ability to delegate work to subordinate or less experienced team members; proven leadership track record.

    ·        Lead change control associated with updates to data dictionaries and business glossary terms, as required to support the data management catalog.

    ·        Tactical support will include gathering business requirements, creating functional specifications, and developing technical requirements documentation, demonstrating knowledge of how solutions integrate with data management tools supported by EDM Team

    ·        Provide in-depth analysis of data, tools, and processes to effectively identify gaps in procedures, business requirements, critical reports, and data management capabilities necessary to strategically mitigate compliance or regulatory risks across the enterprise.

    ·        Effectively use approved video creation software (e.g., Snagit) to produce rich and engaging videos.

    ·        Serve as an administrator of Jira to support EDM initiatives, project plan, and Kanban board, creating user stories to track project status and tasks in a dashboard within the same tool.

    ·        Prepare and deliver timely to EDM Manager all project progress status reports, identifying level of effort and impediments for each task, as well as downstream or upstream impact, but completing on an ongoing or a weekly basis.

    ·        Create data dictionary artifacts used by technical and business data stewards to map physical data elements for technical metadata and business metadata, having a strong attention to detail.

    ·        Able to clearly explain data domains within data management within a banking or financial institution environment is strongly desired.

    ·        Strong project management and delivery experience, leading large-scale information management / enterprise data management engagements through all phases of the project lifecycle that include requirements gathering, developing business use cases, creating acceptance criteria, determining level of effort, translating pseudocode to SQL statements, data validation exercises, and developing test scenarios and test scripts for all phases of supporting data management functions within EDM Team.

    ·        Write, support, and test Python scripts and SQL code, as required for maintaining bulk upload processes and .csv files as part of refreshing metadata within the critical inventories, data dictionary, user groups, and business glossary within the data governance catalog. 

    ·        Effectively measure and communicate risks to EDM Manager and senior team members, identifying potential impact with project, timeline, scope, or deliverables to ensure data governance catalog remains whole in accordance with regulatory requirements and compliance standards for Ally Critical Element (ACE) terms or metadata data elements.

    ·        Communication skills: Comfortable and experienced communicating to senior management and across functions within different type of audiences, having the ability to deliver strong stakeholder management capabilities with key focus on delivery and client orientation.

The Skills You Bring

  • Software / Technical Skills:

    ·       Full Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, SharePoint, Teams, PowerPoint, Visio, Excel, Outlook)

    ·       Extensive hands-on experience and professional knowledge of SQL is required

    ·       Working knowledge of BI tools (e.g., Power BI, SSRS, Tableau, Business Objects, or Cognos BI) is a plus

    ·       Working knowledge of data governance tools (e.g., Collibra, Informatica, IGC, or Talend) is a plus

    ·       Experience with Cloud technologies (preferably AWS) is a plus

    ·       Working knowledge of Agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum, Kanban, Lean, XP) is a plus

    ·       Working knowledge of multiple database programming languages is a plus, including Python, R, Scala, Java, or equivalent languages


    ·       Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or related field or equivalent experience; Master’s degree in highly preferred

    ·       3+ years of relevant work experience using SQL and T-SQL in data management, data migrations, data governance policies, business intelligence, and data warehousing projects, or related expertise in Information Technology

    ·       Ability to write intermediate- to advance-level SQL queries, stored procedures, or triggers in a professional environment, supporting corporate, accounting, or finance systems, but within banking, securities, investments, or financial regulated organizations

    ·       Exceptional communication skills with an ability to professionally represent EDM Team, liaising between data management, data stewards, executives, and technology partners.

    ·       Strong experience with leading and presenting data issues captured during gap analysis exercises to management, data stewards, and executives

    ·       Domain data management and master reference data management experience with hands-on development of data mapping, data dictionary, data integrity rules, data quality controls assessment for presenting to executive leaders. 

    ·       In-depth knowledge and experience with serving in a lead role during data migrations, systems integrations, ETL process development of flat files, and documenting technical specification and functional requirements documentation, interfacing with both technical and business teams

    ·       Competency and expertise supporting and analyzing data models, creating data process flows and procedures, and the development of taxonomy for reporting data hierarchies within a data management tool or BI reports

    ·       Critical Thinking: Ask questions, Dig-in, explore & come to new conclusions based on the findings

    ·       Intellectual curiosity and aptitude to pick up new technical skills

    ·       Passion, positive attitude, engagement and desire to take over challenging assignments as part of a team, making things WORK
