The Opportunity
This role is on a hybrid schedule in office some each week with some remote work. This role will be in our Detroit, Michigan or Charlotte, North Carolina office. Some travel required currently a few times per year.
Senior Counsel will report to the Assistant General Counsel supporting Ally’s Deposits business, who reports to the Deputy General Counsel – Business Line Lead. This Senior Counsel position will focus primarily on providing legal advice to identify and mitigate legal risk associated with the provision of consumer deposits products, including digital payments processes, fraud and financial crime, marketing, and customer care and advocacy. The Senior Counsel will also work collaboratively on a team of legal professionals supporting Ally’s Consumer Banking business including special Consumer Bank projects, as well as stay informed of changes and developments in consumer banking laws and regulations.
The legal support will include review of various business initiatives, marketing, contract review, complaints, and regulatory changes.
The Work Itself
Senior Counsel will collaborate closely with the Assistant General Counsel to provide legal guidance on Ally’s deposits operations and business initiatives, including:
- Provide practical and prompt legal guidance on legal risks and issues.
- Review escalated complaint responses.
- Review marketing strategies and marketing campaigns.
- Review internal policies and training materials.
- Help negotiate vendor contracts.
- Serve as a trusted business partner and creative problem-solver.
- Collaborate with other members of the Legal and Compliance Staff and Government Relations team, as needed.
The Skills You Bring
Minimum Qualifications:
- Law Degree from a reputable law school.
- Bar membership in good standing required to practice law in designated/required jurisdiction.
- 7 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor from a top tier law school
- Bar membership in good standing
- Ideal candidate will have 3+ years’ experience in law firm, corporate legal office, or government regulator.
- Knowledge of relevant federal statutes and regulations, including CFPA, UCC, TISA, ESIGN, TCPA, and FCRA as well as relevant state consumer protection laws preferred.
- Experience in financial services preferred.
- Ability to independently manage multiple assignments in a high-volume environment.
