The Opportunity

The Director of User Research at Ally is an integral part of the overall User Experience Design practice.  This role directly manages a team of experience researchers as well as a research practice.

Responsible for gaining insight about the usefulness and usability of digital experience at Ally.  You will collaborate with the user experience team and the digital product owners from across all of Ally’s lines of business including Consumer Auto, Dealer, Bank, Invest, Mortgage and Lending.

The Work Itself

Lead a Team of Research Professionals

  • Organize alignment of researchers to meet line of business needs and balance assignments across team on an ongoing basis
  • Coach researchers and collaborate on research planning and analysis as needed based on level of experience which ranges from Principal to Associate levels.
  • Connect researchers to business strategy, goals and desired outcomes and assist researchers with setting up longer term research programs and approaches to support road maps
  • Build a culture of engagement and pride within the team where researchers thrive

Direct the User Research Practice

  • Implement strategies to deepen empathy for our customers and prospects with partners
  • Collaborate with other research teams within Ally including market research, brand, VOC and analytics to ensure we’re aligned to effectively and efficiently meet the research needs of the Enterprise
  • Track themes and trends across research that should be elevated and proactively identify new research opportunities
  • Manage research team operations and budget, vendors, tools, and processes in both Charlotte and Detroit offices
  •  Execute on a vision for a beautiful brand-new in-person usability lab in the Charlotte office

The Skills You Bring

  • Engaged and effective people manager
  • Experience with intake and planning for research approaches to support complex digital experiences
  • Gifted at understanding and articulating the big picture as well as the details
  • Comfortable working inside a large matrixed organization
  • Self-directed, proactive, flexible problem solver
  • Strong communication, collaboration, facilitation, and influencing skills
  • Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods with our focus on usability testing and 1x1 interviews; but could include conducting or utilizing competitive reviews, production performance metrics, data analytics, surveys, VOC and research to fuel journey mapping, scenario building, Persona or design thinking working sessions
  • Background in UX Design, Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Usability Research, Psychology, Cognitive Science, or other related disciplines
  • 7+ years in research disciplines with 3-5 years in people management
