We are seeking a Director, Head of Innovation Labs to establish and lead Ally’s next-generation innovation engine. This role will define and evolve a portfolio of innovation labs focused on rapid experimentation, emerging technologies, and new business models that drive material impact across the enterprise.
Operating at the intersection of strategy, technology, and venture-style execution, this role emphasizes disciplined experimentation, scalable incubation, and strong governance. You will set the vision and operating model for how ideas move from concept to pilot to scaled product, while partnering closely with business leaders, product, engineering, design, data, security, compliance, and legal teams to ensure innovations are bold, responsible, and commercially viable.
As a senior technical and innovation leader, you will identify external trends, build strategic partnerships, and cultivate internal talent to continuously expand Ally’s innovation capacity. You will balance speed with rigor, creativity with accountability, and exploration with measurable business outcomes.
At this time, Ally will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position.
The Work Itself
- Own and evolve the technical vision and architecture for Innovation Labs, establishing a scalable ecosystem for rapid experimentation, prototyping, and incubation across emerging technologies.
- Continuously evaluate and pilot emerging technologies and architectural patterns, including generative AI, autonomous agents, machine learning platforms, advanced analytics, cloud-native, and automation, and drive strategic adoption where they create material business value.
- Define technical standards, patterns, and reference architectures for building AI-enabled MVPs, proofs of concept, and pilots that can transition efficiently into enterprise-grade products.
- Design and oversee shared innovation tooling, sandbox environments, and cloud-based experimentation platforms for model development, agent orchestration, data access, and rapid application delivery.
- Establish lab-level approaches for data architecture, model lifecycle management (MLOps/LLMOps), integration, security, identity, and observability to support fast, safe experimentation.
- Ensure innovation solutions meet enterprise requirements for security, privacy, reliability, accessibility, responsible AI, and regulatory compliance.
- Partner with product, engineering, data, and infrastructure teams to modernize core platforms and introduce AI-first and automation-first capabilities.
- Drive technical due diligence for innovation investments, build-vs-buy decisions, and external partnerships related to AI platforms, tooling, and emerging ecosystems.
- Identify systemic technical risks and scalability constraints (e.g., data quality, model drift, cost, latency) and lead cross-team architecture initiatives to address them.
- Influence and guide technical decision-making across the organization by leading architecture reviews, setting engineering best practices, and mentoring senior technologists in modern AI-enabled system design.
The Skills You Bring
Minimum Qualifications
- 9+ years of relevant experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field(s) of study or equivalent
- 9+ years of distinguished experience in software engineering, advanced systems architecture, or applied research, with a track record of shaping technical strategy at enterprise or industry scale.
- 5+ years of experience mentoring principal- and staff-level engineers and cultivating next-generation technical leaders.
- Recognized technical authority in emerging and advanced technologies (e.g., generative AI, autonomous agents, advanced analytics, distributed systems, cloud-native platforms), with evidence of original contributions or thought leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to reason about highly abstract problem spaces and translate novel concepts into durable architectural patterns and scalable platforms.
- Proven experience leading and influencing highly technical, senior-level engineers, architects, and researchers in exploratory and innovation-driven environments.
- Deep expertise designing large-scale, resilient, and evolvable architectures, including data platforms, AI/ML lifecycle systems, and automation frameworks.
- Track record of establishing technical standards, reference architectures, and engineering excellence practices adopted broadly across organizations.
- Exceptional systems thinking, with the ability to connect long-term technology horizons to near-term product and platform investments.
- Experience operating in regulated, security-conscious environments while enabling responsible adoption of frontier technologies.
- Ability to influence executive leadership, set technical agenda, and drive alignment without direct authority.
