The Opportunity
This role can be hybrid based out of our Ally Detroit (MI), Charlotte (NC), Lewisville (TX), or Schaumburg (IL) offices, or can support remote work within the US.
The Claims Litigation Director is responsible for the strategic oversight, management, and resolution of complex casualty and liability claims within the Garage Keepers and Dealer Inventory Insurance programs. This role will also provide coverage expertise and support for commercial automotive inventory insurance for dealers. The position requires strong decision-making abilities, litigation strategy leadership, and senior stakeholder communication to drive optimal claim outcomes and maintain alignment with business objectives. Position will report to Senior Director Claims Operations.

The Work Itself
- Lead the investigation, evaluation, and resolution of high-exposure casualty, liability, and complex litigation claims.
- Develop and execute litigation strategies to achieve favorable outcomes while balancing cost, risk, and business objectives.
- Partner with defense counsel, third-party administrators, and vendors to ensure high-quality litigation management.
- Review and approve litigation budgets, settlement recommendations, and coverage positions, ensuring adherence to company standards and regulatory requirements.
- Provide coverage analysis and recommendations on coverage positions, including advising on drafted reservation of rights and declination letters.
- Serve as the subject matter expert on coverage matters.
- Analyze and interpret policy language, endorsements, and legal precedents to guide claim handling and coverage decisions.
- Collaborate with internal and external legal counsel on complex coverage issues and declaratory judgment actions.
- Present large loss, high-exposure claims, and coverage recommendations to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Communicate litigation strategies, case developments, and financial impacts to executive leadership in a clear and concise manner.
- Provide decision-making support to claims adjusters and leadership on complex claims and coverage issues.
- Collaborate with underwriting, product, and legal teams to ensure claims strategies align with product offerings and business goals.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to claims adjusters and other team members.
- Participate in roundtables, large loss reviews, and reserve committee meetings.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance claims processes, quality, and efficiency.
- Ensure all claims handling practices comply with regulatory requirements, company policies, and best practices.
- Monitor legal trends, litigation outcomes, and industry developments to adapt strategies and recommend changes to claims handling protocols.
The Skills You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree required; JD preferred.
- 7-10+ years of claims experience with significant experience in litigation management (i.e. preferred commercial auto casualty/liability).
- Expertise in Garage Keepers, Umbrella, and Commercial Automotive, Inventory Insurance preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret complex coverage forms and develop sound coverage positions.
- Proven decision-making skills in high-stakes, high-exposure claim situations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present to senior leadership and external partners.
- Experience managing external counsel and negotiating settlements.
- Strong leadership abilities with a passion for mentoring and developing talent within claims teams.
