The Opportunity

Senior Counsel will report to the Assistant General Counsel supporting Ally’s Privacy Compliance Office, who reports to the Deputy General Counsel - Auto Commercial Services & Customer Delivery.  This Senior Counsel position will assist in providing privacy legal support to the enterprise and will support all business lines, including the Privacy Compliance Office, and will provide legal advice to identify and mitigate privacy risk.  Such activities may involve providing legal guidance for information security incidents, reviewing business and marketing initiatives, supporting the business in responding to regulatory inquiries or examinations, staying informed of changes and developments in privacy laws and regulations, and data privacy law implementation projects, as needed. The Senior Counsel will also work collaboratively on a team of legal professionals supporting Ally’s Auto Finance business including special Auto Finance projects.  


The legal support will include review of various business initiatives from a privacy perspective, marketing, contract review, complaints, and regulatory changes. Senior Counsel is expected to work collaboratively as part of Ally’s team of legal professionals supporting all parts of the Ally enterprise from a privacy perspective.

The location for this position will be Detroit, Michigan or Charlotte, North Carolina. Some travel required.

The Work Itself


·       The role will work closely with the Assistant General Counsel to provide legal guidance on practical legal and business issues related to the privacy program, business initiatives, and regulatory examinations. The role will provide support through involvement in the continuous improvement of Ally’s privacy program, including:

·       Provide practical and timely legal guidance on legal risks and issues

·       Review privacy events and escalated complaint responses

·       Review marketing and IT strategies and marketing campaigns

·       Review internal policies and training materials

·       Help negotiate vendor contracts

·       Serve as a trusted business partner and creative problem-solver

·       Collaborate with other members of the Legal Staff and Government Relations team, as needed.

The Skills You Bring


·       Juris Doctor from a top tier law school

·       Bar membership in good standing

·       Ideal candidate will have –

    •  2+ years experience
    • Experience in regulatory law or contract negotiation is strongly preferred
    • Knowledge of relevant industry standards on privacy, federal statutes and regulations, including GLBA and FCRA  as well as relevant state data privacy statutes and regulations preferred.
    • Experience in financial services or information technology preferred

·       Ability to independently handle multiple assignments in a high-volume environment.
