The Opportunity
The position is a supporting role in Ally’s Financial Crimes Compliance organization, providing tactical execution and compliance leadership for critical AML functions including customer risk scoring, and various AML monitoring, modeling, and machine learning capabilities across the Ally Enterprise and Business Lines.
The Data Science Manager of AML Monitoring will be working with senior leaders, AML Investigations, and Enhanced Due Diligence, to manage efficient and effective models and routines to identify AML risk. This is a management role that requires financial crimes knowledge and technical acumen as well as the ability to simplify concepts for cross functional teams.
Partner with the Enterprise Sanctions, AML Investigations, Enhanced Due Diligence, the AML Program Management team, Enterprise Technology and lines of business in ensuring that the day-to-day operations are conducted in compliance with regulatory and legal requirements, in addition to company policies and procedures.

The Work Itself
- Manage a team comprised of Data Scientist professionals to support multiple transactional and/or behavioral models to detect potential AML suspicious activity and identify customers that may pose AML risk.
- Supervise and maintain AML Customer Risk Scoring model including tuning initiatives and data analysis
- Represents the customer monitoring function as primary contact with Model Risk Management partners
- Foster innovation by bringing to bear groundbreaking technologies and concepts when applicable (such as Machine Learning)
- Manage a team to assess the quality of the data for model development as well as inputs to models and performs statistical analysis of transactional data
- Provide analytical detail and narrative of findings to leadership
- Analyze the effectiveness of automated monitoring methods and provide recommendations for improvement based on identified risk and control gaps
- Facilitate preparation of model documentation to support the model development/validation process.
- Stay updated on money laundering and terrorist financing issues, including policies, procedures, regulations, standard methodology, criminal typologies, and emerging trends.
- Ensures day-to-day operations are conducted in compliance with regulatory and legal requirements and the organization's policy
- Perform risk management to minimize risks
- Promote teamwork and collaboration to consistently deliver to the standards required.
- Understanding of AML regulatory requirements, BSA, USA Patriot Act
- Uses judgment, creativity and sound technical and analytical knowledge to develop and recommend solutions relating to company policies and standard practices
- Builds vital documentation for regulatory agencies, internal audit, and testing teams
- Collaborates with senior management to exchange information and reach consensus on regulatory and policy application and interpretation.
The Skills You Bring
- Bachelors in Data Analytics, Data Science, Mathematics or a related major, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years in banking/finance industry or data analytics
- Proficient in Data Analytics and Data Modeling required.
- Proficient in tools such as SAS, SQL, Python, R required.
- 2+ years managing a team preferred
- Knowledge of AML/OFAC compliance, surveillance methodologies and/or proprietary AML/OFAC monitoring systems preferred.
- Strong research skills, advanced skill in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Access, and experience with on-line research systems
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work well with others
- Ability to prioritize workload and balance multiple duties
- Possess independent analytical skills
- Proficiency in excelling within a fast-paced work environment with time-sensitive deliverables.
- Ability to lead others in achieving measurable objectives
