The Opportunity

Under general supervision, the typical duties of the in-house legal counsel are to provide legal advice for the organization on their legal rights and obligations. The position will handle a variety of moderately complex assigned legal projects and matters. The position interacts with clients and is integrally involved with the strategy, planning, and problem solving within the organization. They also review internal and external service agreements/contracts and documentation to ensure compliance with the laws within the concerned jurisdictions, and take lead on negotiating terms of engagement with vendors, suppliers, purchasers, etc. in order to protect the interests of the Company. To be successful, the position must understand all aspects of the business and what effect decisions will have on the Company's overall success. Also, the position must have the ability to build solid, professional work relationships with business and/or corporate functional clients. Work involves a high level of decision making initiative and independent judgment. Work is primarily achieved by the individual or through project teams.

The Work Itself

The Senior Counsel will report to the Assistant General Counsel, who reports to the Deputy General Counsel - Auto Commercial Services & Customer Delivery. The Senior Counsel will work collaboratively on a team of legal professionals supporting a range of Ally’s commercial Auto Finance business including: Ally’s online wholesale motor vehicle auction (SmartAuction) and third-party remarketing operations, commercial vehicle financing, municipal financing, and specialty commercial financing of heavy and medium duty trucks (Commercial Services Group), along with other special Auto Finance projects.  The legal support will include product development, marketing, contracting, credit fulfillment operations, servicing, complaints, and regulatory changes.

The location for this position will be Charlotte, North Carolina, or Detroit, Michigan. Some travel required.

The role will work closely to provide practical legal and business advice throughout the various stages of program development and customer experience. The role will provide support through involvement in development and execution of products and programs, including:

  • Provide practical and timely legal guidance on legal risks and issues
  • Review website content and marketing materials
  • Review internal policies and training materials
  • Draft and negotiate vendor contracts and other commercial agreements
  • Serve as a trusted business partner and creative problem-solver
  • Collaborate with other members of the Legal Staff and leverage outside counsel, as needed.

The Skills You Bring

  • Juris Doctor from a top tier law school
    • Bar membership in good standing
    • Ideal candidate will have 2+ years experience.
  • Experience negotiating a variety of commercial contracts, including vendor contracts and commercial credit agreements preferred.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry standards, federal statutes and regulations, including Reg. B and Reg. Z. Familiarity with relevant state statutes and regulations, including statutes and regulations related to licensing.
  • Ability to independently handle multiple assignments in a high-volume environment.

  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills.
